Neuromuscular Conditions

Central nervous systemNeuromuscular conditions include a large range of conditions and ailments which are a result of problems with the central nervous system. The nerve signals acting of specific muscle groups is impaired, resulting in changes in muscle activation such as spasticity or paralysis.

Examples for such conditions include: ‘drop foot’, Cerebral Palsy, Spina Biffida, Charcot Marie Tooth (CMT), Polio, Cerebrovascular Attack (Stroke) and Multiple Sclerosis (MS).

Treatment would be to improve the position of the foot, knee and hip, which has changed due to altered muscle activity.

An Ankle Foot Orthosis (AFO) is a device which the patient wears over the ankle, foot and lower leg, to hold the ankle in a better position, therefore improving the knee and hip position and ultimately improving walking gait.
