Physio workplace assessments are a HSE (Health and Safety Executive) requirement for any business employing five or more people for whom the working day involves sitting at desks for extended periods, using display equipment such as laptops or desktop PCs, or any work which involves repetitive movements such as answering phones.

What is a workplace assessment?

Musculoskeletal (MSK) complaints comprise some of the most common reasons given for workplace absence in the UK.

Correcting workplace ergonomics can play a huge part in reducing the amount of time off taken by employees who cite conditions such as repetitive strain, back, neck or joint pain.

Employees who are returning to work after injury or surgery also require assessment of their work environment to optimise their recovery and to minimise the chances of recurrence of injury. This can facilitate not just a faster return to a full duties but can improve employees’ overall well-being and increase morale and productivity. Likewise, it’s necessary to fully assess the ergonomic workplace set-up for employees with pre-existing disabilities.

A workplace physio assessment involves analysing the posture of employees during their work hours, how their seating arrangements impact the way they sit or move, the kind of movement necessitated by the equipment they use (for example keyboards, phones or copying equipment) and the general ergonomic flow of the work environment.

The therapist would get a history of existing and new MSK issues among the workforce and would investigate any specific complaints. A report would then be made detailing any potential risks to individuals and recommending the changes that need to be made in order to avoid future problems.

This may include alterations to the physical set-up of the workplace, or it may involve recommendations for equipment, or exercises for staff.

If these changes were implemented and adhered to, it would be expected they would generate increased productivity and a happier workplace for years to come.
