Custom Knee Ankle Orthosis (KAFO)

At our clinic, we specialise in custom-designed leg braces, known as knee ankle foot orthoses (KAFOs).

These braces provide support for the entire leg, helping people with neuromuscular conditions that affect normal walking. By stabilising the knee, ankle, and foot, a KAFO improves leg alignment, making it easier and safer to stand, walk, and move with confidence.

Each brace is carefully designed to fit your body and lifestyle, giving you the support you need while maximising comfort and mobility.

Who wears a leg brace – knee ankle foot orthosis (KAFO)?

A KAFO is typically recommended for individuals living with neuromuscular conditions such as cerebral palsy, stroke, or multiple sclerosis, where muscle weakness affects both above and below the knee.

It can also be beneficial for people with significant structural deformities that impact knee alignment.

By supporting the knee, ankle, and foot, a KAFO helps improve leg stability and alignment, making standing, walking, and daily movement safer and more comfortable.

Who Needs a KAFO?

For people with neuromuscular conditions or significant knee alignment deformities affecting leg strength and stability.

Purpose of the Brace

Supports the knee, ankle, and foot to improve leg alignment, stability, and walking ability.

Benefits

Enhances safety, mobility, and comfort, making standing and daily movement easier and more efficient.

How do Knee Ankle Foot Orthosis (KAFO) work?

Significant muscle weakness can alter joint positions and, in severe cases such as nerve paralysis, make walking very difficult. This can lead to gait changes like dragging the foot, hyperextending the knee, or reduced hip control.

Orthoses help by lifting the foot, improving ankle alignment, and supporting the knee and hip to enhance walking.

The type and level of support depend on which muscles and joints are affected. When weakness involves muscles above and below the knee, a full-length knee ankle foot orthosis (KAFO) may be needed.

In some cases, an ankle foot orthosis (AFO) can improve overall leg alignment. We always discuss options with patients, balancing effectiveness, comfort, and appearance to find the best solution.

Frequently asked questions

Here are some of the most commonly asked questions from patients regarding knee ankle foot orthosis.

What is a KAFO?

A KAFO (knee ankle foot orthosis) is a custom brace that supports the entire leg, stabilising the knee, ankle, and foot to improve walking and standing.

How does a KAFO help with walking?

By supporting the joints of the leg, a KAFO improves alignment, lifts the foot during walking, reduces strain on muscles, and enhances overall mobility and safety.

Who might need a KAFO?

KAFOs are usually prescribed for people with neuromuscular conditions such as cerebral palsy, stroke, or multiple sclerosis, or for those with significant knee alignment deformities affecting leg strength and stability.

Are KAFOs comfortable to wear?

Modern KAFOs are custom-made for each patient, focusing on fit, comfort, and functionality. While they may feel bulky initially, proper design and adjustment ensure they support movement without causing pain.
