Reasons for ingrown toenails

An ingrown toenail, also known as onychocryptosis, occurs when the edge of a toenail, usually the big toe, grows into the surrounding skin. This can cause pain, redness, swelling, and sometimes infection. Ingrown toenails are a common condition and can be caused by various factors, such as:

  • Improper Nail Trimming: Cutting toenails too short or not straight across can encourage the nail to grow into the surrounding skin.
  • Tight-Fitting Shoes: Shoes that squeeze the toes or put pressure on the toenails can contribute to ingrown toenails.
  • Trauma or Injury: Stubbing your toe or other forms of trauma can lead to ingrown toenails.
  • Genetics: Some people may be more predisposed to developing ingrown toenails due to the shape of their toenails or genetic factors.

Tips for managing ingrown toenails

  • Warm Soaks: Soak your foot in warm water for 15-20 minutes several times a day to help reduce swelling and tenderness.
  • Proper Nail Trimming: Trim your toenails straight across and avoid cutting them too short. If you can’t trim your nails properly, consider having a professional do it.
  • Wear Proper Footwear: Choose shoes that provide enough room for your toes and avoid tight-fitting shoes.
  • Avoid Aggravating Activities: Try to avoid activities that put extra pressure on your toes, especially if you suspect an infection.

If the ingrown toenail is causing significant pain or has become infected, it’s advisable to see a healthcare professional. They may need to remove a portion of the ingrown nail or prescribe antibiotics if there’s an infection.

In some cases, recurrent ingrown toenails may require a minor surgical procedure to remove a portion of the nail or, in severe cases, the entire nail. Always consult with a healthcare provider for personalized advice based on your specific situation.
