Orthotic treatments for neuromuscular conditions

Neuromuscular conditions include a large range of conditions and ailments which are a result of problems with the central nervous system.  The nerve signals acting on specific muscle groups become impaired, resulting in changes in muscle activation such as spasticity or paralysis. These conditions include:

  • “drop foot”
  • Cerebral Palsy
  • Spina Biffida
  • Charcot Marie tooth (CMT)
  • Post Polio
  • Cerebrovascular Attack (Stroke)
  • Multiple Sclerosis (MS)

Treatment would be to improve the deteriorated position of the foot, knee and hip which have altered due to the loss of muscle power.

An Ankle Foot Orthosis (AFO) is a device which the patient wears over the ankle, foot and lower leg, to hold the ankle in a better position.  By doing so the knee and hip will be positioned better and ultimately improve walking patter, reduce fatigue and pain and preserve the joint and its surrounding muscles.
