Foot Supination

A foot which remains supinated can result in injuries associated with high impact forces

Based in Glasgow, near George Cross

Foot supination is the outward tilt of the heel

Foot supination is the opposite motion to foot pronation.

Foot supination is the outward tilt of the heel and is usually associated with a high arched foot. Often a supinated foot in standing will become an over pronated foot when walking.

However a foot which remains supination in standing and walking can result in injuries of the body associated with high impact forces due to the more rigid nature of this supinated foot. Back pain and shin splints are typical injuries of the supinated foot.

The Foot and Ankle Assessment will highlight alignment deviations associated with the supinated foot. Poor foot position will alter the alignment of the knee, leg, hip and therefore result in abnormal forces around those various joints – leading to injury.

The Supinated Foot can be related to higher impact forces through the body although this depends on the passive motion around the joints of the foot (the foot and ankle assessment will highlight this).

Injuries associated with the supinated foot are;

  • Tendinopathy
  • Stress Fractures
  • Back Pain
  • Knee Arthritis
  • Ankle Instability
