There are many triggers for headaches, including stress, trauma and chemical
The most common reason for a headache is the result of tension of the neck muscles. Studies have confirmed there to be a significant increase in neck muscle tension in those that suffer headaches compared to test groups of people who do not suffer headaches.
Tension in the muscles of the neck can relate to poor biomechanics. For example, a rotated pelvis will result in rotation through the spine and thus rotate the shoulder and effect neck muscle tension. If we consider that a change in foot posture can result in a shift in the position of the lower leg, the knee, the pelvic etc, then we can understand why improving foot position can affect the alignment of the neck thus alter muscle tension around the neck.
Treatments for headaches caused by biomechanical ailments
A biomechanical assessment will highlight biomechanical “inaccuracies” and contribute to an understanding of why your neck muscles are stiff and out of balance.
Neck stretching will help reduce the tension of the neck muscles however it is important to work to improve alignment abnormalities around the pelvis, and this may also include working to
Foot orthotics or foot mobilisation therapy may also be required to improve foot, knee and pelvic posture.
Myofascial therapy is very effective in relieving neck tension and ultimately working to reduce headaches.
