What is steroid injection therapy?

Steroid injection therapy is a targeted treatment used to help reduce inflammation, relieve pain and improve movement in joints, tendons and soft tissues.

At our clinic, all patients undergo a detailed ultrasound-guided assessment with Dr Eyvindsson to help accurately diagnose the source of pain and determine whether injection therapy is appropriate.

Ultrasound guidance also allows the cortisone injection to be delivered precisely to the affected area for improved accuracy and effectiveness.

Steroid injections are commonly used to treat conditions such as plantar fasciitis, tendon injuries, arthritis, bursitis and Morton’s neuroma.

By reducing inflammation directly at the source, treatment can help improve mobility, support rehabilitation and allow patients to return more comfortably to everyday activities, exercise and sport.

Frequently asked questions

Here are some of the most commonly asked questions from patients relating to steroid injection therapy.

What does a steroid injection do?

A steroid injection helps reduce inflammation inside a joint, tendon or soft tissue structure to relieve pain and improve movement. Steroid injections are commonly used for musculoskeletal pain, sports injuries, arthritis and overuse conditions affecting the feet, ankles, knees and lower limbs.

What conditions can steroid injection therapy treat?

Steroid injection therapy can be used to treat a wide range of painful inflammatory conditions including plantar fasciitis, Achilles tendon pain, tendon injuries, bursitis, Morton’s neuroma, joint arthritis and soft tissue inflammation. Treatment may help reduce pain, improve mobility and support rehabilitation.

Are steroid injections effective for plantar fasciitis?

Yes. Steroid injections are commonly used for plantar fasciitis when heel pain has not improved with rest, stretching, orthotics or physiotherapy. By reducing inflammation within the plantar fascia, treatment may help ease pain and improve walking comfort.

Can a steroid injection help arthritis pain?

Steroid injections are frequently used to help manage arthritis-related joint pain and inflammation. Ultrasound-guided steroid injections may help improve joint movement, reduce stiffness and provide temporary pain relief for patients with osteoarthritis or inflammatory joint conditions.

What is an ultrasound-guided steroid injection?

An ultrasound-guided steroid injection uses real-time ultrasound imaging to accurately identify the affected tissue and guide the injection into the correct area. This approach improves precision and helps ensure treatment is delivered directly to the site of inflammation or pain.

Who performs steroid injections at the clinic?

Steroid injections and ultrasound-guided assessments are performed by experienced Sport and A&E doctor, Dr Eyvindsson. He assesses a wide range of musculoskeletal injuries and joint conditions, helping patients receive an accurate diagnosis and personalised treatment plan.

How long does a steroid injection take to work?

Some patients notice improvement within a few days, although full results can sometimes take up to two weeks. The speed and duration of pain relief depends on the condition being treated, the severity of inflammation and individual response to treatment.

How long does pain relief from a steroid injection last?

Pain relief following a steroid injection varies between patients and conditions. Some people experience relief for several weeks, while others may notice improvement for several months. Ongoing rehabilitation and management may help maintain longer-term results.
