Ultrasound Diagnosis and Injection Therapy
Our specialist Sports Injury and A&E doctor, Dr Bjarni Eyvindsson offers a range of injections for various types of injuries and conditions. Injection Therapy is the injection of medicine into the affected tissue to promote healing and reduce pain. It is often used to supplement physiotherapy or orthotic therapy. Our doctor uses an ultrasound to administer any injection therapy. Injection therapy can treat a range of injuries including but not limited to tendinopathies, Arthritis, joint inflammation and sprains and ruptures.
What is an Ultrasound?
A musculoskeletal ultrasound is a safe and painless scan that uses high-frequency sound waves to generate a picture of structures within the body. An ultrasound creates images of structures such as muscles, tendons and joints which allows our doctor to medically assess and diagnose a range of injuries.
The ultrasound scan can identify and diagnose most injuries of the muscle, joints and tendons – from your shoulders down to your toes!
Injection Therapy
At the clinic, we offer four types of injection that our doctor administers.
Cortisone
A cortisone (steroid) injection is injected into the joint. It works by calming the immune system to reduce inflammation, which is often the cause of any pain within the joint, in turn improving function of the affected area. Cortisone injections can help with Arthritis, Tendinopathy, Bursitis, and injuries such as Frozen shoulder.
Hyaluronic Acid
Hyaluronic Acid (HA) occurs naturally within the body, in the eyes, skin and joints. Injection of HA helps to reduce pain and stiffness within the joints. It works by lubricating the affected joint which helps with movement and shock absorption. HA injections can help with Osteoarthritis, Frozen shoulder, Meniscus tear, as well as hip, shoulder and knee pain.
Cingal
Cingal injections combine corticosteroid and hyaluronic acid to provide an effective fast-acting injection. Cingal is an effective injection due to the combined effect of the lubrication of the HA, and inflammation reduce and pain relief from the steroid. It is primarily used for Osteoarthritis but is used with other conditions/injuries that cause stiffness, and inflammation in joints.
Arthrosamid
Arthrosamid is a relatively new type of treatment for knee osteoarthritis that offers patients an effective alternative to current available therapies. It is injected into the knee where it works to cushion the joint and reduce pain. Arthrosamid injections are estimated to last 2-3 years although research is currently showing this to be up to 4 years so far with good results.
